Refectory table by definition means a long narrow dining table that is supported by two trestles joined by a stretcher or set into a base.
With a refectory table you will typically find that the table legs are supported by circumferential stretchers that are positioned very close to the floor. These highly elongated tables were originally used for dining in monasteries during the Medieval times and later were commonly found in castles and other noble residencies.

Antique sideboards make a very functional and at the same time very unique and elegant feature in a modern home.
These were an important feature in traditional homes in the past. Sideboards were also known as servers as they were an important part of the dining room with their surface area providing enough space for placing the platters and serving dishes during a meal time.

Large antique dining tables or farmhouse tables are often incorporated in contemporary decor. Antique farmhouse tables are simple with clean lines without any embellishments. These were used for the most mundane of the purposes and were built out of necessity. These days the large antique tables are put to versatile uses in the modern homes. The saying ‘sometimes less is more’ holds absolutely true for these tables in most of the cases. These are used as a place to gather and dine during large family gatherings or while entertaining friends at home. These also work very well for other functional uses such as for baking, studying and even used in the modern kitchens as work surfaces. Their functionality has made them one of the most loved pieces of furniture in a home.

French farmhouse tables have a very minimalist appearance and a casually chic appeal. These were created during the times and in places where dining was with minimum of the fuss with just a place set up required to quickly sit and dine. These tables were never ornate and came without any embellishments or decorative designs. It was all about simplicity which was fulfilled with the simple structure and styles of the farmhouse tables. Many of the early examples of the French farm tables were handmade with the wooden boards hand cut. These early tables were usually long and narrow with limited joinery and tools.

Chestnut furniture has a particular rich quality about it which is appealing in its own right. Although it lacks the grandeur of oak, it has a simple yet warm appearance which makes it a perfect fit in a casual setting. Chestnut furniture can often be associated with a rustic style and is also quite resilient. The grain movement is wavy and interlocked giving it a good appearance. The furniture is usually in the shades of light to medium browns. The informal appearance of the chestnut dining tables make them a perfect fit in spaces that are more casual and informal.

With chestnut furniture usually comes to mind an elegantly aged look with beautiful colour contrasts and great grain movement thast are the signature characteristics of the furniture. These coupled with the beauty of handcrafted furniture are some unique traits when it comes to period chestnut furniture that you will not find in the new furniture of today. The modern mass produced furniture options just cannot match up with the elegantly hand crafted furniture pieces from the old world.

There are a few basics that need to be considered before choosing any kind of antique furniture. Understanding the various styles available is important. If you are one of the proud owners of antiques, you are well aware of the effort that goes into taking care of antiques such as antique furniture. If it needs repair you cannot just take your piece to any carpenter. Nor can you try and do it yourself as a repair job that is not carefully executed can not only alter the value of your treasured possession but also might look a little like patch work in certain cases spoiling the overall look. It is always better in case of antiques to go for professional help rather than compromising the look and value.

Traditional antique tables with contemporary chairs or vice versa! Doesn’t it sound like an interesting pair? Any smartly incorporated contrasting element in the décor can stand out and even make a stunning display for that matter.
Experimenting with the different styles and mixing and matching is the trend of the current design era. So if you have already purchased a beautiful antique maybe you can think a little differently before impulsively investing into the uninspiring matching sets that, when you mix them, you may risk you bringing out nothing very interesting.

An increasing number of us have opted for an open floor plan in the house or flat to combine kitchen and dining. This calls for kitchen tables that should need to be functional but also to look good and to be able to double up as a work space as well.

Extending tables are your best bet when it comes to maximum flexibility of space to adapt to the changing dining needs. These antique dining tables come in very handy if want a farmhouse table that is compact but can extended to add more space whenever required. These extendable tables... often farmhouse tables... are also known as draw-leaf tables and they open up with a simple pull of the additional leaves that rest under the main tabletop. For homes that have an open floor plan, these work the best since most of the times the areas are used for multiple purposes.

Whether you want to revive a hidden or neglected piece of antique furniture or want to improve the functionality of a wobbly chair or table etc there is no shame in working on an antique to improve its functionality and its value should not be detracted as a consequence. Recently many items of furniture have been damaged by flooding and storms resulting in even more antique furniture requiring restoration.

Antique French Farmhouse Tables are best known for their rustic charm and the distinct appeal because of their worn down and distressed appearance. Though the appeal lies in the distressed look, there are a few things that you should religiously take care of in order to maintain the rustic appeal as well as the look of the farmhouse. Antiques are meant to be passed down the generations to come and in order to make sure that they last that long you need to take good care on a regular basis.

But given the fact that these items have been around a long time they are bound to suffer the occasional damage. Some damage enhances the look and feel of the antique but other damage calls for remedial attention. In these circumstances our restoration team is there to restore the antique to its former glory.

The drawleaf/extendable table and the dropleaf table are the best options when it comes to choosing a dining table with the flexibility to add those extra dining spaces when you have people over for dinner etc. A drawleaf table has pull out leaves, typically at either end, to provide 2 to 4 extra seating places whilst the drop-leaf is typically characterised by a fixed section at the centre and a bendable hinged section on both the sides that can be opened up to increase the seating space by maybe 5 to 6 paces. Having these extending dining tables in the dining area is the best option if there is any kind of space constraints or the area is also used for some other activity. In such spaces these draw leaf tables work amazingly well.

In addition many houses have adopted an open plan concept that often combines the kitchen and the eating areas.

Almost all of the old and rustic farmhouse tables are simple yet elegant. Their worn down appearance give them a sense of character and style. No matter where you put them, these blend in fairly easily and enhance the feel of any room. Great News just sold the gorgeous pale rustic Antique Normandy Table to a lovely gentleman in the States. This table will be shipped out this country this week after only arriving from France a few weeks ago. These tables are really rare to find but when we do get them they never seem to hang around.
It's all about the shape, style and colour. This particular antique table had the most beautiful patination on the top with matching base. This very rustic farmhouse style does suit most situations, they look great in farmhouse kitchens with a little vintage feel.
They also suit modern contemporary homes with straight lines and minimal colour. Antique tables always brings the warm homely feel to that kitchen or dining room with practical, modern and, with the right accessories, potentially full of character.
If your kitchen/dining room is modern/industrial/rustic/contemporary/clean vibe that we are all looking for in our homes, then our skill persona in an antique tables shop could give it that finishing touch.

Welcome to my blog. I hope I can be of some help when it comes to Antique Furniture like Antique Farmhouse tables. We at Antique Tables have been sourcing and restoring Farmhouse tables for the past 30 years. I must say that it is a wonderful job. Everytime a new table makes it way into our workshop we all cant wait to see what the final result will be. Before Christmas we managed to get our hands on the most wonderful antique trestle table in it's 17th Century style. After many hours of restoration the table all came together in it's glory. With stunning patination and glorious colour it was the most wonderful Antique French Farmhouse Table yet. We then found a very old monestary table which again once restored amazed us all. Any antique table being trestle, tapered leg or Refectory style suits all different situ's. We always try different chair selections to see what suits these tables. Again they look fab with Antique Country styles as well as modern upholstered chairs or even plastic. These things alway depend on the style of the room but most look stunning.

Add a touch of warmth and history to your home with this exceptionally rare burr elm country tavern table that has a beautiful colour and flawless patina. The worn look works very well for this table instead of making it look shabby, which a normal table might look. In fact the worn look adds to the character and style of this extremely rare country tavern table.
The top consists of two stunning rare 2" thick book matched figured burr boards that are held together by end cleats. The base is of typical 18th Century X Framed construction in highly figured elm with a high centre stretcher.

Antique tables have become very poplar over the years. Their popularity is all thanks to the versatility in ways and the places they can be used. The French farmhouse tables for instance suit most of the households be it a farmhouse, country or modern home. With the rustic lines and finish these tables have a decorative feel to them and they blend in perfectly in all sorts of settings.
